Goals and Motivation
To most of us, we have encountered an age old question, "what motivates us?". Is it to attain something? or for someone? or is there a deeper motivation that binds us to our goals? Have you answered this question lately? At some point we need to reflect, what is our goal and why do we do it? There should be a backbone, in my opinion, in order to effectively succeed.
Me, I want to play songs that I like and in the future, play for someone special or even in front of thousands of people. That's my goal, to become a better pianist/performer in around 3-5 years time. What motivates me, that would be the love of music.
We all understand that playing the piano isn't exactly a walk in the park. It takes years to master. Decades perhaps to play almost perfectly. Try asking yourself, what is your goal? What drives you towards it?

Re: Goals and Motivation
Well, for me its quite easy yo answer I think. I have always admired those who could play piano, but since we dont have the "culture" for it in my family, I never started to play it. Besides I have done all types of sports my whole life...
So what motivates me is that this is somthing I just really want to be Really good at. To play really beautyfull music with my own hands. To master a big instrument. And I could also see myselfe infront of a public, playing. That would have been awsome, sometime in the future
But, also I am afraid I started to late?! I dont know exactly where the end of the road is for me. I want to be really good, at least as good as Andrew =) But, can I be one day with alot of practice+?! I dont know...

Re: Goals and Motivation
My goal is to compose music... Make a great tune that they play on the radio,
instrumental, because I dont think I'm good at singing.

I love music, with my favorite being classical and neo-classical stuff. I simply want to be able to perform masterpieces.

Re: Goals and Motivation
Second thoughts of this topic:
What motivates me is the beauty of music, it's so much music out there that's so extreme... And it's all just buildt up by 12 different notes!
Today I started practicing a song I really wanted to learn on the piano, but I found this great arrangement for acoustic guitar, it's Titanic's own "My Heart Will Go On"... That's probably one of the most girlish songs out there, but it's so amazing... And I'm totally in love with Younha - Houki Boshi, gonna pick that up again when I get the digital piano. But I think a goal we all should have is to compose music, because then you're a true musician yourself, not just a copycat, but you'll write down what's you. If it's improvising or using time to compose doesnt matter as long as you make music from within you. I dont say skip practicing songs other have made, because practicing a song you like is great. But why not make something yourself.
I think making own music a very underrated thing in the sense of learning how to play an instrument, I havent seen any lessons yet, focusing on composing, and making own music. It's all about learning the scales, practising sheets, try to play by ear, improvise... But there is a difference between improvising, and composing... When composing you can take as long time as you want, try to figure out wyas you want it to sound. You basically build a house. When improvising, you're just building a castle in the sand that gets washed out by the sea after you're one. Both can sound beautiful, but with the castle you dont have time to polish, and add stuff, you might would've wanted.
I dont know what Andrew thinks, but I think he should start composing some classical music, since he's very experienced in that field. Would be great to hear some modern classical music ( can modern be classical, that'sthe question? )
This turns off topic because I forget what I write...

Re: Goals and Motivation
Heheh, well, I admit I feel better now, but I wanted that since I was a kid, but my parents did't want me to start teaching, cause they thought I would be worse in my primary school then :S :S So I feel like I have lost about 15 years ))
Good luck!

Re: Goals and Motivation
Good luck to you also Viccky88, you have your life ahead of you. My parents never tried to get me to take music lessons when I was a kid and I was not interested myself.
