Yamaha AvantGrand
You guys all heard about this new "type" of piano coming out? The AvantGrand I think the name is snazzy! Its about to come out here in Europe!
It seems like technology has caught up, and, added with the stylish look of it and its lesser weight and length than a normal grand piano it'll take less space! Its actually digital too so no tuning. :3 I think this'll become the piano I want to own, when I get the money of course! Which is rather considerable but far farrrr less than an acoustic grand :3 They say its about $20,000! ... aim high i say!
There are new technologies in it too to allow it to vibrate like a real grand, and 4 speaker placements for great sound! Haha, I sound like a yamaha sales rep! I'm just really blown away at how something digital can seemingly have the class and properties of an acoustic grand at a lesser price <3 Check it out if you have time, and maybe find some videos of people playing it too to check its gorgeus sound!

Re: Yamaha AvantGrand
it seems pretty sweet! i've gotta say i like the roland v-piano a little better . Granted i'm not too experienced, and haven't played on either, but it seems like the avantgrand is still somewhat limited because it uses sampled sounds. But hey, what do i know! . Also, i'm not a fan of the avantgrand's looks, to me it looks kind of like a toy, if you're getting a digital piano, why try to make it look like a real one? i think one of the big reasons people get a digital piano is for space saving, so putting it in that form factor kind of defeats the purpose. If you have the space for that, might as well just get a baby grand. once again, this is just my opinion

Re: Yamaha AvantGrand
Its smaller than a baby grand im pretty sure and costs lots less haha, which is the main reason why Its affordable! Well by affordable I mean like $20,000! I brought it up because the keys are the same as a grand, you cannot feel a difference and the musical sampling has now gotten to a point which is so advanced (recorded from different angles, separate recordings for every millimeter the key is pressed down and sound projected from 4 angles now, the 4 speakers) coupled with the vibration technology which simulates exact vibrations you'd get from playing a big piano with the lower notes produces more vibration and the louder you play, everything is virtually at a stage where it IS the same as a grand in its sound AND feel however it just so happens to be digital. I think technology has just got to the point where it can almost imitate it perfectly.

Re: Yamaha AvantGrand
You're right, you do sound like a yamaha sales rep.
Have you done a A/B comparison on playing acoustic grand vs digital grand before writing all that?
From the video, the size almost looks like a baby grand, and I believe Andrew's was something like $24 000, no not much of a difference.
Anyway, it's easy to get enthusiastic (I should know), but the facts are simples: try it yourself. I still make do with pianoteq, and my little 2.1 speaker system

Re: Yamaha AvantGrand
I suppose a working in tune $1,000 piano compared to the most expensive piano in the world wouldn't be much when you think about it! Its still music, its still the right notes, it still has the potential, but the more expensive one has all the flashy stuff and a controversially better sound, some people don't even like it.

Re: Yamaha AvantGrand
Very interesting and I suppose what you buy depends on what you can afford and what you want. So if it makes you happy and you get great pleasure from it and you entertain others thats fine.
On the technical side I suppose it would be possible to produce even better sound than the best acustic piano by working in various combinations of overtone to the actualy note.
Where are the physists on this panel. I know of one at Vancouver university who is working on sound but,I do not know him personally so I could not contact him.
I will try by friends to get some info on the subject from him.
