Hello Everyone,
I'm a beginner pianist, still learning how to play. However, I need a piano. I can't afford a acoustic one.. so I need a digital one. Can someone help me out on which one I should buy. I don't know if I should get a synthesizer or digital piano. I'm looking for a keyboard with the full 88 keys and pedals. I have $1000 to spend.. but I'd like something below the $500 price range. What keyboard would you recommend for a beginner?

Hm.. well, to be honest, IF you got 1000 bucks I think you should at least use that cause going down to 500bucks will get you a WAY less for the money. For a 1000 you can actually get a decent digital piano, but for 500 you got to be lucky and get something used Smile

You should just look for an online shop near that got delivery-service near you! I did that. The delivered free of charge and I got my piano ready in a week Smile

I really like Yamahas. I know there are other brands, like Victor like Roland. But I dont know that much about Rolands, so Id recommend a Yamaha Smile

I thing there is a Yamaha Digital Piano series that incl a good Digital Piano for about 1000bucks. Below this and you are looking at good keyboards, and the good keyboards dont really compare to decent digital pianos! So thats my advice!

Hmmm. I'll take that into consideration. But, are there any good Yamaha Digital Pianos that are in the sub-500 dollar range?

Not that I know of. Then I think youd have to settle for a mediocre keyboard!
But there might be special offers on older models ect - So you have to find some online stores and check prizes and models. Smile

Hmm. I see. I was looking at the Yamaha P85 and it seems it's near $500. Do you know if that's any good?

Well, its probably up to the challenge against others in that range. But I know for a fact that the 500dollar pianos/keyboards dont have the same sampling ect and that they produce in general a very fake piano sound. BUT if its like that for this exact piano, I dont know!!! Razz

You have to research it online, try to see if its any videos showing it on youtube. I know there are many of those types of videos out there! Smile

Edit:

Well, it sounds okay I guess Smile A little plasticy at times! Its the bass that sort of sounds most fake. Its not that deep Brawl in the bass-sound, but It might be a very good piano in this price-range Smile

That second video had these two comments:

And what do you think of the p85 ? Is it worth the money ? What wolt you prefer in this financial category ?

I'm even willing to sell my Roland RD700sx (a $2,200 keyboard) for this one!! I dunno why but It's
more expressive and the voicings are so smooth...

Hmm. I checked online. Seems good. But is 64 notes of polyphony sufficient for a beginner?

64 notes of polyphony? How many fingers do you have?

I'm no expert but I know one thing -- no matter what you get there's a better one and if you had it you'd want the next better one. But it's better to get what you can aford than to have nothing. My keyboard sounds 500 percant better on headphones or when plugged into external speakers. The plastic keyboard box is a dreadful speaker enclosure and that's where the plasticy sound somes from.

Important things if you gona aim for a good piano-thing and commit to it:

88Keys
Weighted Keys
Good Sampled Piano Sound with dynamics
Pedal

Everything else is sort of Not important for getting good at the piano.

Hmm. Okay then. I only need a Sustain pedal right? Because some of these come with two other pedals.
