Do your Czerny Op 299, it will help your fingers move!
My teacher made me do this since Jan07 and there are 4 books in this work. I am now in the middle of book 3 and my fingers have stabilised. Especially the 4th and 5th fingers which are the weakest!
The exercises are good if practiced everyday - but for me as I don't have the time, now I do my exercises at least 5 mins every other day before I start working on my pieces and it helps.
The only thing to note is that you should play the exercise fluently before you move to the next as they get more challenging and teach different skills for the piano. So be patient......
Imagine if I had more time to practice - sigh.....
The exercises help because left is doing something diff from right hand, and the brain has to think all the time. You also recognise patterns in music whether consciously or unconsciously and you will be able to read faster when you add speed!
Have fun.
Cheers.

Hi...
I've been using Op. 599 to practice on my sightreading... and it's been very helpful.
Are the exercises in Op. 299 like Hanon's?

Re: Do your Czerny Op 299, it will help your fingers move!
Hi Phi,
no, not like Hanon, I have also played all of Hanon but think Czerny is better for independent hands devt. It will help you even out both hands because while left is playing accompaniment, right is playing running notes and vice versa, ie, left also gets practice in running notes while right plays accompaniment! Hanon exercises are largely in "unison" or playing together. I have not tried op599.
Czerny's op 299 will also help with sight reading.
but this is basic finger strength. Other stuff like appegios and those difficult things you find in say Chopin's Etudes, need other types of exercises to master! I find it difficult to play Etudes, but now I can play most of Mozart and Beethoven's Sonatas, plus sight read new pieces alot easier!
Cheers!

Re: Do your Czerny Op 299, it will help your fingers move!
Hello everyone,
hey, don't get the wrong idea - the book is actually 4 parts and each part has at least 10 exercises and increase in complexity.....its not like u can play it all in one day! I took 1.5 years and I am halfway thru part 3!
another tip is to not get discouraged and to master the exercise before you go on to the next, becos skills learnt in earlier exercises will help with the learning of the more challenging ones.
I still can't play the exercises at the metronome speed indicated, so there.....still more musical roads to travel....
happy trying!
where is the link by the way?
Cheers!

Re: Do your Czerny Op 299, it will help your fingers move!
yea that book is great! My tendonitious couldn't handle those things. If you did some of that book you'd probably be better than me fairly quickly. It's a great book.
Re: Do your Czerny Op 299, it will help your fingers move!
PS. does anyone want to e-mail me a copy of the PDF? If someone else has it I would rather not make another account I'll only use once just to download the book

Okay! I started the 8first bars yesterday, and the ex is great for me, cause I noticed a little time back that I dont got a smooth thumbtuck when I start to go faster on the "white-key-thirds-scare" if you get what I mean, I cant remember the name for it
But I guess I should be careful then about overdoing these ex?!
I have at first glance told myself Im gona try one ex each week..
But great, then Im starting it for real

practice
I know.. if we only had more time to practice.. but any practice time is better than nothing.. try scheduling it in to your day.. sometimes you'll get more done if you actually put it on your schedule or calendar as if its an appointment or job, etc..

Is there a midi file around for Czerny Op 299? It would help to hear what it should sound like..

Buckle Up!
ETA: I bookmarked the book. This looks really neat (yet impossibly difficult) and is the first time I've heard of this. Thanks for bumping, Rayman!
