What about modes? Empty What About The Modes? ...my formula

Post by CactusMoon Mon Jul 28, 2008 11:19 pm

I discovered this step pattern "formula" for modes...it is a great memory tool .The step pattern just keeps moving the FIRST step of the pattern to the end...
like this
Begin on C move 1 1 1/2 1 1 1 1/2 = Ionian = CDEFGABC (a.k.a. C major)
Begin on D move 1 1/2 1 1 1 1/2 1 = Dorian = DEFGABCD
Begin on E move 1/2 1 1 1 1/2 1 1 = Phrygian = EFGABCDE
Begin on F move 1 1 1 1/2 1 1 1/2 = Lydian = FGABCDEF
Begin on G move 1 1 1/2 1 1 1/2 1 = Mixolydian = GABCDEFG
Begin on A move 1 1/2 1 1 1/2 1 1 = Aeolian = ABCDEFGA (a.k.a. A minor)
Begin on B move 1/2 1 1 1/2 1 1 1 = Locrian = BCDEFGAB

So you see, all you need to know to remember the mode scale patterns is the step pattern for the C major scale !!!!!!!!

Also...remember the Pentatonic scales are fun too !! Any combination of notes in the
step pattern of 1 1 1&1/2 1
the easiest to "see" is
Begin on F# move 1 1 1&1/2 1 = F# G# A# C# D# (the black keys)

Have FUN !!!!!!!

Great post Cactusmoon!

That's a great contribution to the forum! ^_^

One way to remember the paturn for the names of the mode is this phrase

"I Don't Play Loud Music After Lunch"
I= Ionian Don't= Dorian Play= Phrygian and so on

I was wondering if you could tell us more about the modes. For example how does the chord work? In the Ionian your home chord is C maj, for this instance, does these chord functions change such as the perfect cadence etc? thanks andrew!
