Re: how long? for beginners?
I dont really know, I actually just pick a song I like, analyse it, and if I think I can manage it, I play it.
Because I will usually manage it if it isnt very fast with big jumps....
If it's very complex I just find a new song.
Most of the songs I wanna play are kinda in the middle, not to hard, and not to easy. I tend to just memorize the first part of a song,
then I find a new one, and start memorizing that... Bad habbit, but I'm trying to change that now, with my Final Fantasy 1 project.
( FF1 songs are short, approx 1 min, they range from easy to hard, all sorts of rythms, and range from 80-150bpm )

Re: how long? for beginners?
Out of personal experience, picking up random songs is bad. If you are having (decent) lessons you mite have someone selecting what's appropriate for you level of knowledge, as you progress.
But if you're learning on your own, it can be harsh, and a setback, to pick up a piece and learn it to exhaustion. Best case scenario is you may be able to do it (no matter which piece) even if it's just a matter of time, or you mite end up frustrated.
It may be gratifying, or feel good to be able to play that certain piece you like so much, or a random new one, maybe as a test. But in overall, you're not going to learn much out of it, except the piece itself, and end up pretty much where you started. This hurst the most, the longer you had to invest in the piece.
To actually progress, you need to know what you know, and mostly, what you don't know. That can usually be overwelming, if you look at it like a goal.
Better to instead look at it as a big lego, where you're buying new sets with new pieces that allow you to construct more complex forms. And there you're looking into knowing music, starting from your instrument, to the underlying mechanics, musical concepts, like relations between notes, and chords and scales. There's alot to learn, and you mite not even need it all.
Just focus on gathering little tools, one after another, and the possibilities each new one brings. Once you get the picture going, you'll easily dismiss any common conceptions of difficulty level, as you will be setting up your own levels.
My 2 cents.

Well, this is my timeline.
Week one - Wheels on the bus and three little fish + right hand only of Can you feel the love tonight
Week two - Love shine a light -
Week four - Easy Canon -
Month 2 - Was cind of not my best month couse there was so much school, si I did not learn anything new, at least that I still know today, until... (Well- Victors Piano solo and a zelda song that isnt on cam yet)
Month 3 - The Entertainer(easyer) -
Also I had started on Fur Elise wich is like this the 10Mai-ish (Biggest project)
And now I learn a couple of songs, including Chopins Prelude in E minor that Andrew recomended me.
And of course still practicing Fur Elise 10-15 min a day. Reposting that one soon, when I get the motivation, couse It can be some work. Also planning on posting Vics Pianosolo
Well thats My 5 months. Hope that helps to give you an image. I have practiced alot the last two months to get where I am at this point. It is all very individual AND how much time you want to put into it!

It might be a good idea to learn scales, and propper fingering on them. And there are so many sheets out there with fingering.
It has helped me alot. I ALWAYS do the fingering that is "recomended" even though its REALLY hard Couse when you get used to it, in a day or two, first the you understand that they usually put the fingering there for a reason. But ist up to you to choose!
But start at Lesson nr 1 and work your way trough the beginner lessons! Its agreat start. If not, you would have to post 1000 questions for no reason really, since they probably are already covered in Andrews lessons!!
Lesson 1:
Lesson 2:

No you dont hehe
The tumbs on each hand is 1 and pinkie is 5. So Vic, I dont think you really play your lefthand like that!
This is correct:
C D E F G A B C
Left: 5 4 3 2 1 3 2 1
Right: 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5

You must put it in context! If you want you can press with what ever finger you want!!
But, if there is a serten scale?? Or a chord? or somthing? Then there is fingering, need to know that =)
Main major scale fingering is
Righthand: 12312345
Lefthand: 54321321
So if it is the B-Major, you start on the B with your nr 1 finger: the tumb! =)
