building a new instrument project
Ok so I had trouble finding a place to put this so I thought this board was best. Awhile ago I had an idea to invent a brand new ACOUSTIC (no elctricity involved) instrument for myself and others. I'm not talking about a bucket with strings I'm talking about an instrument you could sell and learn and be very versatile.
Here's my idea:
...........................................
First off there is a normal piano keyboard (inverted harpsichord colored keys because it's cool) except there will be two or even three manuals (separate keyboards above each other.) in which a player will be able to simultaneously be able to play all three and is designed for that to be easy and comfortable. The first manual will be normal 12 tone temperament, the second will be tuned 50 cents off (although the exact number may very with each key.) I had the idea today to have a third manual which has about 25 cents off which allows eight tones making a total of 36 keys per octave. [I love microtonalism and want to make it more prominent!] Because of the multiple manuals a player of a normal piano can also have the joy of playing any normal piano song on any of the three manuals. Yes I got the idea from the quarter tone piano... Anyway when a key is played a hammer in front of the key strikes a xylophone key which is suspended under a tone pipe (a copper, brass, or steel pipe which is tuner exactly to that pitch) which resonates the sound. there are also dampers, and a damper pedal. And hopefully a couple other wierd pedals (stops) to change the sound such as causing a different hammer to directly strike the pipe instead of the xylophone key.
----------------------------------------
Not gonna get into technicle details but I will post some blue prints and other designes later.
Not sure if I should go beyond quarter tones anyway though because eighth tones are kinda hard to hear the difference from a quarter tone. I don't know. I'll take any suggestions and would really like hearing what ya think of it. Don't know how long it will take or expensive but it's an invention and they can't be rushed dattebayo!

Oh my, what a project. You seem to have thought a fair bit about it.

Re: building a new instrument project
It'll probably be expensive to make the prototype, and also require alot of time. Not saying you shouldnt go for it tho ^_^

Re: building a new instrument project
Ok so here's the plans I've been drawing:
Here is the keyboard: Bottom keys are tunes exactly like every other piano/harpsichord/clavichord/organ ect... Top layer is well.... tuned higher but there are different amounts depending on the key, finally the middle is tuned again different depending on the key but is smaller than the top row of keys all consisting of a total of 147 keys 36 notes per octave. Giving you options such as: (neutral 3rd, minor 4th, major 5th, diminished 2nd, distonal 7 seventh ect...)
Note the hole in the sharps and flats is to provide easy reach to the 2nd and 3rd keyboard.
Here is the action I've come up with, note that I really have never engineered anything before but I think it works.
I'm having the most trouble figuring out how the pipes should fit in the instrument... I don't want it to go across the whole room and bending the keys makes the weight unbalanced So I wish somebody could suggest something.
