Re: question on dotted notes?
hey dotted notes are only dots on the right side of the note the dot adds and extra 50% to the note that is being doted.
a dot above or below the note would show you that you need to play the note staccato (sharply detached)

Re: question on dotted notes?
Mmmm, just this evening I was looking at this with a friend: in Sinding's Russell of Spring where we found a note (semiquaver), followed by two dots to the right. And we worked it out thus:
A semiquaver is an eight-th note.
The first dot then is a sixteen-th note i.e. a semiquaver.
The second dot must be a thirthysecond-th note i.e. a demisemiquaver.
Doing the maths we then have:
1/8+1/16+1/32=7/32
Sure enough the next note (tied to the double dotted semiquaver), was there with it's three little tails - a demisemiquaver - our missing 1/32.
Thus we had our full "other" 1/4 note for the 2/4 time signature.
No wonder I did not understand this when I was first taught at age eleven. Actually my first teacher did not even try and ,I think when I
stopped lessons aged fifteen I may have had only a vague idea - I prefered to take a crochet as my basic note and totally disreguard time signaturers.

Two dots to the right of one note..?
I don't think they ever write that in sheet music, sure its not the repeat sign? That is two dots.

Re: question on dotted notes?
@Klavier: no, Christopher is right. I also learned that, a long, long time ago... And for instance the Appassionata sonate by Beethoven starts with such notes
