Ok guys, I recently typed ALL this info out and hand picked it all for my latest lesson #40 on how to teach yourself piano

I thought I'd copy and paste what I typed into the forum for other people to use as a reference. I know it's not complete but maybe it will help someone. BTW: I only picked out pieces that I think sound awesome in that level. Smile

Outline for learning Piano:

1 Goals
Piece list examples and suggestions (from pregrade1-ARCT)

Goal Setting is very important
What is your:
Life Goal?
Year Goal?
Month Goal?
Week Goal?
Day Goal?

Divide your time like this:

1 hour a day?
50% to pieces = 30 minutes
35% to Scales and technique = 21 minutes
5% to clapping = 3 minutes
5% to ear training = 3 minutes
5% to sight reading = 3 minutes

Do everything to the best of your ability, make each little thing a challenge or "contest with yourself"

thanks thomas ^_^ yea, this list took me a LONG time to write, since i didn't copy it from somewhere. I did it from the pedagogy i've studied over the years and compiled papers, pieces, sheet music and such. Probably 75% of the pieces were off the top of my head, the rest were written down from past studies. ^_^ but it took me about 2 hours to write it out. Hopefully it gives people idea's

Wow Im impressed that Bartok made it to your list. I agree with Thomas as well Hungarian Rhapsody no2 is way great and way above my level Smile
A piano student in our class set his goal to play it but I advised him to try Bartok Play first Smile

Not long ago I was also looking for pieces by grades
These are the files I found good:

http://www.pianoworld.com/Uploads/files/Graded_Pieces_Sorted_By_Difficulty.PDF
A list of 31 pages pieces by grade uptil level 10 + U (whatever that means, must be a pro level Smile )

http://www.abrsm.org/resources/pianoComplete0608.pdf
10 pages of recommendation for pieces and for the techniques by level up till level 8

Hope that helps to choose as well. Smile

This is very helpful indeed. I would like to learn Prelude in e minor op 28 no 4 - Chopin and then I will try to get someone's camera and record it. I don't think it will be hard. And when I upload it I will ask you about choosing my next piece. Going for some easier or maybe harder pieces.

I had a lot of trouble with that as well, still do actually. What I've found for most simple songs, is that obviously some of the right and left hand notes are going to hit at the same time, so i turn on a metronome very very very slowly, and see which notes will hit at the same time, and try to get the synchronization down using those notes as sort of references. Hope that made sense...

Oh and don't expect to be able to put your hands together just because you know them individually, or at least I haven't been able to do that yet Razz

Really appreciate that list Andrew, but where may I find sheet music for those songs? I just started playing so I guess it's grade 1 for me, but when I google those songs I just end up on pages where you have to buy whole books to get those sheets, not like on guitar where there are a bunch of tabs for free everywhere. Any tips on a page where I may find those grade 1-2 pieces you mentioned? scratch

Post by jytte Sun Jul 19, 2009 1:35 pm

That is my problem too. I am a beginner too (3 weeks), and tried to find some of the pieces on the list, with little or no success.

I did find 2 very good sites with sheets (pdf) and soundfiles for many good pieces, in various levels starting with the very basic beginners.

I imagine they are well known already, but thought I'd share it with any other newbies anyway:

Yes, this is indeed very much appreciated, Andrew. We know how much effort you put into these videos (simply for the fact of you staying up late at night); your teaching is precise and enjoyable. You make the hard stuff look POSSIBLE, 'cause I know some teachers that make easy stuff look impossible Mad ; but everything you explain is understandable and pleasant. rendeer
