Synthesia - is it any good?
Hi, does anybody here know about the falling notes program, Synthesia? This one here:
http://www.synthesiagame.com/
Looks like a fine way to help you learn songs without being able to read notes, although the registered version includes note display. I've set it up on my computer and found some MIDI files for few of my favorite songs on the internet to download.
The program converts all instruments of a song to falling notes, even the melody (singing part) but until I grow an extra pair of hands I can't play them all on the piano. Registered version let's you connect your computer to your digital piano and the program can be set to wait until you play the right notes.
So is this program helpful for learning to play? Would I be wasting my time using it, that should maybe rather be put into learning to read sheet music better?
I must say it is very tempting to try out my favorite songs with the aid of such a visual teaching method. At least the easier ones, that don't involve a lot of fast playing chords or arpeggios.

Can it replace sheets? Yes, but then you wont be able to read sheets. I dont really have an opinion. The only bad thing about using it is that you wont be able to pick up a sheet and play what's on the sheet.
I'm sorta reading "piano rolls" myself ( it's called that because piano's playing automaticly in the old days used rolles with black lines telling the piano how long to play a key and what key to play ), used Music Masterworks for ages, instead of reading the notes, I've been getting used to reading the piano roll. I can actually sight read now. But i'm practicing my sheet reading skills too, but I cant read while playing yet.
Not as fancy, it doesnt light up what keys to play, but....:

Re: Synthesia - is it any good?
Do the colored notes move towards the piano? If they do this is pretty similar to Synthesia turned 90° degrees clockwise. I'm also wondering if one might as well just use sheet music and intervalic reading as this piano roll.
The intervals in the roll correspond to the intervals in sheet music. From a space to a line or vice versa equals a second, fourth, sixth etc, while a jump between two spaces or two lines gives you a third, fifth etc.
The only difference being, in sheet music I'm not always sure which octave I'm playing. Maybe it would help to draw a line between octaves on the sheets? Always trying to take a short cut, yes I know!

Re: Synthesia - is it any good?
Nope, it doesnt move or anything, but I just follow the "dots", and the color tells me what octave they are at so you can really get lost, even if you dont pay attention to the piano on the left side.
Most music software has these, probably because they are so easy to edit. Time is the essence in every job I believe.

Synthesia now has the option for you to read the music notation as you learn to play.
