help reading sheet music of the song "twinkle, twinkle, little star" Empty help reading sheet music of the song "twinkle, twinkle, little star"

Post by sridhar Wed Mar 24, 2010 3:38 pm

Hi all,
I've started practicing the songs in this list compiled by Andrew, categorized based on the level of difficulty.

I'm a beginner, still doing the pre-grade songs. I have got an elementary doubt while reading the sheet music of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little star". In this link you will find the sheet music of that song.

As you can read in the sheet music, the note in bass clef in the first beat is a half note A. My question is does this means that I should play only the note A in the first beat or should I play A major chord (combination of keys A, C#, E) ?

Please correct me if I have used wrong terminology. Thanks in advance guys.

It is a C, not an A, see this thread:

https://afpa.hooxs.com/general-music-theory-f11/treble-basscleff-what-notes-are-considered-treble-s-bass-notes-t754.htm#11297

And it means you should play this note, not a chord.

But of course, you can write your own version and use some chords Very Happy
I've tried a few beats. The next to last chord is an inversion, because I think it sounds better, when the notes are more near the previous chords:

This is the sheet, created with the nice free program MuseScore:

Thanks so much for patiently answering my question frank. I liked your drawing very much. And your song too. I'm practicing the notes you gave me.

And I made a terrible mistake reading the bass clef. I used EGBDF for the bass clef too. I now recollect that it is GBDFA for the bass clef.

I feel I'm too new to try something on my own version. I mean I don't know much about music theory and all. Do you think I can try creating a new version on my own?

I don't know either much about music theory, but I managed to compose a small piece, by trial and error and with the help of this forum, until it sounds good:

https://www.youtube.com/user/frankbuss#p/u/9/gzhxUHFwbAk

It helps, if you know some basics about scales etc., but you can try it and I'm sure people in this forum who knows more than me, will help you, if you have any questions. But if you are really new, maybe would be better to start with playing some more pieces, until you get a bit more comfortable with the piano. The list at the webpage you cited looks good:

when if sheet music write down 3-4 note likes CEG or CEGC in same line in vertical...then press it 3-4 note same time

when you press single note its called melody
when you press 3-4 not with rule chord likes CEG or CEGC its called chord

correct me if iam wrong..thanks

This is right. Of course, later for more complex parts you have chords in the bass clef and in the treble clef, sometimes at the same time, if the melody itself is enhanced with chords.

As always, Wikipedia explains it in more detail:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chord_%28music%29

BTW: if you want to just play on piano, a pentatonic scale is nice for improvisation, see my latest Youtube video and the related videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6viIe3gB0YI

Thanks for the clarification Frank. I got to revise the video lessons where Andrew teaches basics of melody and chord.

Will try pentatonic scale for improvisation as you suggested.

My two cents about your video - Your improvisation was really good. And thanks for posting your videos, they inspire me as a beginner. See if you can some how hide your shadow in your next piano video, it's a bit distracting.

You are right. I think there is some room to the left of my piano for using a nice uplight lamp for the next recording instead of the normal ceiling lamp sunny

BTW: I don't see you in the list of my subscribers.
