Re: it it useful to get 61 keys
61 keys are ok, it really depends on what you're gonna play. I used a 61 keys for a year before I got a 88keys, actually I got it when I was 15, but didnt really get into playing before I turned 19. Classical music tend to use more than 88 keys in most cases, but modern pop music doesnt. As a beginner you have enough learning about theory and how to play the instrument.
It also depends on what you can afford, buying a 61 keys now is waste of money if you can afford a 88 keys next month.

Like Victor said, it depends on what you want to play. I was trying to play Fur Elise on a keyboard with 61 keys. To be honest, I'm having a little trouble.

got a 61 key casio. im having fun learning. im not trying to play anything classical. just some rock for my own enjoyment.
alot easier to learn than i thought, but, getting my left and right hand to operate independently, is like doing the pat your head and rub your tummy routine.

It is, but when you finally break the code, it's easy. Practice, practice, practice

I always go for 88 keys as a minimum. 61 is very limiting depending on what you are playing.

Re: it it useful to get 61 keys
For me, the main issue is not strictly the number of keys (I myself have a 61 key keyboard at home, but have access to full keyboards/pianos elsewhere), but rather the lack of weighted keys. I feel a little thrown when I transfer from an actual piano/keyboard with weighted keys to my keyboard, which has no weighted keys (has touch sensitivity at least).
