Hello from Portland Oregon
Hi there, my name is Liz and I've been playing the piano since I was 2 years old. My dad plays by ear for his church and forced me to take lessons with him until I graduated high school and moved away to college. For me I found the piano a burden growing up. I play many instruments (mainly soprano sax and flute) and felt that learning the piano was a waste of my time.
About a year ago my father and I lost contact with each other due to personal reasons I cannot explain. I woke up one day and decided that I was going to sit down and play the piano. I found myself sobbing as I could hear my fathers music in my head and wished that he were with me.
I love the piano now. It is my heart and soul and everything to me. I find myself coming home from work and sitting down to play the piano, getting lost in the music and opening a whole new world for myself. I don't know if I could go a day without playing now.
Since this last week I have mailed my father and sent him a cd of my playing and am now waiting for his response, but he called me to say he received the recording and that he looked forward to it. I want people to know that you can learn to love something even if you think that you never will, and that instead of deciding that you don't like something right from the begining it is important to give it a chance!
I hope you enjoy this info!
Hugs,
Liz

Re: Hello from Portland Oregon
Hey Liz!
Fantastic story. I have father issues myself so its nice to hear things can get back together again. We've been working on it as well, so I know exactly how difficult it can be.
Although I must admit my dad doesnt understand a whole lot about music - lol...
Anyway, I wish you luck for your playing!

Re: Hello from Portland Oregon
I enjoyed reading the comments. I think the best advice I can give is that you have to learn to trust, and forgive, and to love unconditionally even though parents make bad decisions all of the time... and yes, it does take time, but I'm happy that people are making connections!
Hugs,
Liz
