Phi's Performances.

After weeks of trying, I've decided to ask for help!!

For almost 3 weeks now, I've been trying to record a performance of myself playing -but I keep striking wrong notes.
But I play perfectly [at least, note-perfect] when the camera's off.

Has anyone had a similar experience, if so, how did you overcome it??

Edit: I deliberately posted on this board -as I intend to post videos of my performances in this thread.

just keep practising until ur totally comfortable playing it

when you're recording try not to care what the people think who are watching you. Think of how you can express the perfect music from within yourself.

You'll actually have to forget that you're recording, just try to merge with the song.... I have the same problem, and I want it perfect to... If I hit a wrong key, I start at the beginning again.
That's kinda stupid if it's a long song, but for know I've only recorded short songs, but when I'm gonna record some of the 3+ minutes songs I'll just have to accept a wrong key ^_^
It's not easy to forget that you're recording, but try forget that you are, and if you do a major error just start at the beginning again.

And, remember, never record it because of us, but because of you, that way you will do better... If you want to make a good recording, you can do it. So go inside the bubble Andrew is talking about, and play the song.... Think of you, the piano and the song as one, and forget us that gonna see the recording ^_^

I actually hit the LAST note wrong once -and had to start all over again!!
I've given up for today...

If I don't gain anything else from all this, I've definitely learnt to appreciate everyone else's videos!!

It is GREAT practice to record and do mistakes! And when you dont get it as good as you want to, it probably isnt weel enough learned yet either! The more secure you are, the easyer it is! And with all that recorded practice you get, the more secure you will be and the chances are greater every time that you will get it perfect!" And then your performance for others will also be alot better Good Luck! It gets easyer after a while, dont give up

Yeah, and there are LOTS of mistakes.



EDIT: I've just realised that the whole point of improvisation is NOT knowing what to play next, and making it up as you go... so the second line in this post is inconsequential.

Awesome man You got some skills in improvising! I like it ! and i loved the sound of ur piano ^^! Some interesting modulation u did there aswell

I had to record straight from the line-out on the keyboard. Hence the wire at the top of the picture...

Couldn't think of a better way to modulate up one semitone

I've managed to make another recording without glaring mistakes...



I was so intent on getting the notes right that I might have skimped the dynamics in some parts.

Btw, out of curiosity, your profile says you play piano since feb 08, but your hands seem to display, I'd say, a fine amount of discipline/years of practice? Just a wild guess, Andrew can probably tell better then me

Hehe... that as a HUGE complement.

I actually started in February but I believe several factors must have made you say that:
-I played the bass guitar with several keyboardists and picked up a fairly good understanding of chords over the years.
-My left hand is my stronger hand... dunno if thats of any help
-I don't even want to go into my practice time.

Anyway, that's probably the best complement I've received about my playing.

Being able to play another instrument has helped in my piano learning [ESPECIALLY with scales] but their techniques are so different it never occurred to me that it could help in my playing

I've actually read (should have a book somewhere) about many professional guitar and bass players having studied/played the piano, especially in the blues/jazz territory.

The theory is the same, and the piano's chromatic scale allows for an easier visualisation that can be aplied to most (all?) instruments.

For me, it's not about learning the piano itself, but music in general, in a friendly UI

I've got a lecturer who ALWAYS says UI... and it was funny seeing that used here.

Music is a language with several dialects [dunno if that's been said before, but I made it up just now ] knowing how to speak the language should be more satisfying than knowing just a particular dialect.
