auuuu my wrist

Post by jytte on Fri Aug 07, 2009 2:39 pm

Not sure if this is the right spot, but here it goes.

Have a look at these two pics:
1 2

I'm a beginner - about 6 weeks of playing. Almost all the songs I'm able to play so far (easy ones) seem to be played in and around middle C, leaving my hand in position (1), right in front of me, most of the time playing. That's a slightly "twisted" hand position, as opposed to playing an octave higher (2). I can only practice whatever song for so long, then my wrist gets sore and stiff. When that happens I just go to practice scales with my left hand (and boy does that need a lot of practice), so that's ok. But It's annoying, when I'm hell-bent on getting a song learned.

Is this a problem that all beginners have, and will that subside when I get some more practice?
When I try to study Andrew and others playing on Youtube, they don't seem to hold their hands any different than I do. But maybe I'm just not relaxed enough?

I should add, that I practice many hours every day, but I try to vary the stuff I'm doing, so as not to put too much strain on my hands.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm exactly the same as you I think Jytte and have also been wondering about whether I am doing something wrong when it comes to my hand position.

I'm also a beginner and attributed how quickly my hands got achy to having started something new and hoped they would become more resistant to it as they get stronger. I think they are gradually gaining more stamina but I can't really be sure, my hand position is virtually identical to yours so it would be nice to know whether we have accidentally stumbled into some pitfall. Surprised

All I can say is two beginners having achy hands makes it more likely that its just us starting out and not anything wrong! Razz

Though you experienced handy people who perhaps started a while ago at piano and overcome this problem would offer me and Jytte some relief! So tell us what it was like for your hands when you first started and how they are now. Smile

I cant see how you can play it in any other way, this is how the arm bends. You cant really do much about how the human body is made.

I'm not an expert in that field even if I've been playing seriously for almost 3 years. I might be wrong, maybe there is another way, but I havent felt any paine doing it.

The guitar makes you twist the wrist in even worse bends and positions, so I cant see any problem. If your hand hurts, it's probably because you use it too much. Maybe take a break and rest for a day or two.

Well, maybe it's just practicing too much.

I don't think I'm practicing nearly enough though, I never go over 3 hours per day at the maximum. I think it may has something to do with my job, I have to use my hands and fingers a lot for it so perhaps my fingers really aren't getting any rest between work, computer games and then piano on top, poor fingers! Shocked

Hi, I don't play the piano anymore, but I have found some videos on youtube that seems to be addressing your twisting problem there. Check this out:

i saw your hand position for C is right..
all your problem is beginning just relax in mind you can press the note
the main problem is...if iam not wrong you play at keyboard...
the pressure for pressing note diffrent when you playing in keyboard
and playing with PIANO instrument...piano instrument is more HARD...
try to play 2 hand not one HAND ^^
i thinks that all for added....happy practice
