Major problem with fingers!

I have been chugging along learning the scales and arpeggios needed for my exam and I learnt them in groups: scales first, then arpeggios. But the problem I have now is that after I practise the arpeggios, which obviously have 'wider' spacing needed with the fingers when you play, I find I can't play the scales because my fingers have adapted to the wide spacing and keep hitting the far edge of the notes and it all just gets in a mess. To try and counteract this I have been making sure I practise them together i.e. not just all the arpeggios and then scales seperately but i still have the problem (to a slightly lesser extent, but its still affecting my overall accuracy). Its a really frustrating problem and Ive even considered quitting because its really stressing me out. Anybody got a solution?

Well, the only thing I can think of is that you have to keep practicing!
I never ran into this problem, so I have never looked for a solution to it, but at first sight, I cant see to much else to do. You sort of have to get enought time on both that your brain knows the difference!

I think practice is tha keyword, oh, and avoid making mistakes when you practice! So if you want to do scales, and you cant hit the keys, you Have to slow down, so that you dont make the mistake, when you do your mind might get confused and it will take a longer time to learn to separate them. Mistakes can be very hurtfull to your progress! So since you Are making mistakes when trying to practice them, you Are going to fast Slow down again, make sure you ALLWAYS play it correct!!!! And as I said, only way to make sure about that is Slower Tempo when practicing

HI tefnut ..i also had same problem ..but as thomas says PRACTISE is the keyword ..eventually your fingers will automatically distinguish as it does when you play different songs ..so dont think of quitting it will all fall into place soon ...so take thomandys advice and slow practise correctly is the solution good luck

Just remember that playing piano isnt supposed to be easy, and you'll probably encounter alot problems as long as you keep playing. I do believe even the most trained pianist will get frustrated from time to time, when learning new stuff. It's all about practice and smooth pathways in the brain.

I can't Imagine Chopin have problems while playing from time to time ..

They used to play for days
