I thought I would put up a video of my son practising Fur Elize and Change The world. This is a Easy Play version for electronic keyboards so we started with simple one key auto-chords, progressed to 3 key chords and he is now experimenting with arpegiating the chords (in case it sounds a little strange in places). I am pretty pleased with his progress as he has read the music and worked nearly everything out himself. He only has time to practise about twice a week which makes it a little difficult for him.

Any comments would be appreciated

Hello!

First of all he is sitting MUCH too high! He barely has contact to the ground, which makes him kind of unstable.
When playing the left hand e major chord (e e g#) he should avoid raising the elbow and try to feel the second finger pulling his hand to the g#. This will be much easier with a lower chair.
The chair also hinders him to play the chords with ease.
In the second piece, he often raises the elbow of the right hand which should definitely be avoided as much as possible! (Again, I know I'm repeating myself, but the lower chair would help with that).

For a self taught boy who doesn't play for that long, it's very good! But you should definitely correct these details if you don't want him to end with a tendonitis some day... Or at least to end with a screwed up technique Wink

ALSO, I forgot to speak about fingering and rhythm!

During the harmonic sequence (the "bridge" when the melody goes "b c d e... g f e d" etc.) the left hand has a bad fingering on the G chord: "g g b" should be played "5 1 2" and not "5 2 1" ! This will help him playing it without jumping.

Also, the section with all the "e"s going up in octaves is messed up rhythmically and the fingering is totally odd. He plays the first two e's 5-5 ... why? He should play them like this:

l.h. 5 1 r.h. 1 1 5 l.h. 1 5 r.h. 1 5 then the l.h. plays the first "d#e". I know this looks complicated written like this, but it's really easy.
And these notes are all equal rhythmically! it's not e.. e.. e e e.. e.. e e etc Smile

Nevertheless, he has quite good fingers, if you correct him he eventually will progress a lot in my opinion.

Thanks - The progression of e's is quite awkward, he started with the tutorial on the keyboard which seems to use quite different fingering to the one that Andrew has on his tutorial, and he has never quite got his head around the change. We will work on all your suggestions and perhaps put up another video

Thanks
