Natural sign

Post by Jussi on Tue Mar 11, 2008 3:47 pm

Wikipedia's excellent article on modern musical symbols wasn't clear enough about this (at least for me Embarassed). Anyways, say I'm playing a piece in E major and in the sheet music there's a note C4 with a natural sign before it. This, of course, cancels the C# defined in the key signature and a C4 is played instead of C4#. Now lets assume there's also a C5 in the same measure. The question is, does the natural sign affect both of these notes, i.e. does it affect only the notes with exactly the same pitch or every C regardless of the octave?

Thanks again!

Hello Jussi,

The same way that a sharp in C on the key signature applies to every C no matter what pitch it is, a natural sign on a C would cancel the sharp of every C through the rest of the measure.

Take care!
