This is rather odd but oh well. Anyways I was thinking if you ever get a son/daughter are you going to teach them piano or let them choose any instrument they like? bounce

Let them decide for themself, but if they're not interested in music, there is no reason to push them to play.

yeah, I agree with Victor. Let the child decide for what he wants in his life, whether he likes to play music or do another thing. But it's good if the child likes to learn how to play, you can be your child's own music teacher! Wink

It would be cool to have a dad or mom that are awesome in piano to teach you.

I would teach him/her if he/she would want it off course. But I'd like it if they play some other instrument like violin or something, so we can play together.

I know people, myself included, who refused to take music lessons as kids. I wish my parents had "forced" me back then -or at least made more effort to get me interested.

It haunts me now when I think of how good a pianist I'd have been if I had a 13-yr head start.

I think YOU should decide for them, but make them see it as fun; and not feel like they're being forced.

Well, now i must disagree with you Phi!! Wink To make your kids to like music, or piano is against everything I stad for as a sosialchildcareworker.(got my bachelor this monday!) Wink You can introduce them, use time with them at the piano, violin, guitar ect but IF they resist it is NOT a good thing to force them! What signals are you giving them? And do you today feel comferteble being pushed into doing things you dont want to do?? No, of course not. Therfore we shouldnt force anyone, and at least not or children to like somthing the dont like.

The reson you do great now, is because you found your passion in music!! Withouth the passion, I dont think you would have been a good musician even with 13 years headstart Wink And you probably would have quit when you couldnt be forced no more.

Well, only my opinion, you are allowed to disagre Very Happy

I must confess I don't have ANY experience with kids -I'm the last child, and am not the most tolerant person Evil or Very Mad -so you must know a lot more than I do... geek But I believe most kids do not want to do anything that's not "fun".
I know I HATED school as a kid. I had to be dragged into the car every morning, I did not do my homework, I tried to get sick -just to miss school.
But when I got older, started doing well and made more friends, I began to appreciate school more.
That's how I feel it should be with music lessons. If they are made to stick at it long enough, they'll begin to appreciate it. santa
I guess it all depends on the attitude of the parents!

If you're parents forced you, your life would be completely different now,
maybe you would've hated music now...

But there is nothing wrong in showing them an instrument, if my sister
hear me play something on the keyboard or guitar, I'm sure she will
wanna learn to play beautiful music, but could happen that she lose
interest and wanna do something else...

Time will show, she's only 1 years old, but I think she thinks the guitar
is more interesting than my keyboard right now ^_^

My brother, 13 years old, started good with the guitar last year ( my sister, 22 years old did actually learn a few chord-songs, but lost interest to ),
but now he's forgotten almost everything and doesnt practice, but I'm sure he wanna play when he gets older, and he will prolly
regret that he didnt take it seriuosly now... He's more into playing computer games...

But cant force him to do something he doesnt want king

Well, there is a big difference conserning Music and School! Draging you to school send you great signals of important norms and rules the sosiety demands of you. Its so many important factors in the schoolarena and the things you can master +++++ Dont need, and want to go deeper into that. But music is somthing no one should be Forced to do!! There are alot of great factors with music. But making a child, or anyone that dosnt want to play music, is just wrong. But there are methods that can be used so that children most likly will end up liking it. The earlier you use these methods the bigger chance of getting a music/piano interested child.

Use your sparetime, social time with the child from an really early age (1) at the piano. Play for the child, sit there with the child. Give positive feedback at that age NO MATTER WHAT. Just let the child experience so much positive being at the piano, that the child will develope a nesacare atatchment to the piano! Of course this can be impossible if the child ex. hate the noise or ect but that is rarly the case! It wont work with every child, couse all children are unike. But this is a way you can gentaly "push" in the right direction! Smile

Probably alot of gramatic errors, to tired to check the spelling Razz

Yeah, I guess it makes more sense to have them ask for it. Hopefully, I'll be good enough to have my kids ask for lessons after hearing me play. bounce

I hadn't thought about that angle before. I guess I'm more determined now because I'm the one paying for any lessons I receive... but we'll never know. farao

Well, as for myself, I'll just play lots of classical music around them, we can have bonding time at the piano, just play around and wack some keys together when they're small. Once they hit about 3 if they have questions about what a key is called I'll start teaching them basic things, but keep everything fun and game like, as if me and my child were just outside playing catch with a ball. No pressure, just fun ^_^
