Beginner: How do I practice?

Post by chantw0968 on Tue Oct 27, 2009 11:14 pm

Hi Everyone,
I just started to play the piano.. really. Like yesterday. So, my question is "How do you practice when you don't really know anything?" I started watching the video's ( just two lessons) and they are great. But, I need to practice between each video and I have no idea what to do. I don't want to just start memorizing songs. Because, like Andrew says that will only teach me a song. Not how to play or play the songs that I want. Any advice..

thanks so much inadvace.

That's a really good question. I think I asked something similar when I first joined the forum a few months back. I'm afraid there isn't any clear cut reply. Andrew doesn't seem to indicate how you should practise in his videos. And different members here have different views. Some people seem to be scales focused, using them as the bedrock, while other people concentrate on learning how to play tunes, believing this will inevitaby lead to a greater knowledge of music and the piano.
But if anyone has a tailor-made itinerary, involving say half an hour a day, it would be good to know about it...

The work on scales etc is only effective if you do it with proper technique. What is important to me is:

1) to play on an acoustic instrument (the rest will ruin your technique quickly, or at least prevent you from getting a very good one)
2) to try to make each note you play sound beautiful (maybe you can practice slowly on some random chords)
3) to learn pieces (not songs, songs are to be sung, not played on a piano) in order to develop your musical knowledge, memory and in order to have a kind of "referential" for sound: you know how you want the piece to sound, and you try to reach it - at your level.

Technical exercices are important, but scales are just one of them (a small part actually). I'd try more to focus on the sound and on a very clear finger activity (try NOT to play using arms, always feel how the key goes down to the hitpoint (hammer vs string)).

ok seems i can help this Question because i have a course in august until now my english not really good but i hope can understand it
-------------
so since i take a course i found a difficult in begining so the step i suggest is :
1st finger not oval (u must usually hold your knee)if not oval try it harder (believe it or not when i got sleep my hand hold down keyboard to take it oval) or straighten finger hold it make some chord with your hand ex CEGC key...both hand....hold it until you feel your hand bigger
its like body do it excersice...because 1st time your hand is inelastic
-----
when its done..do fingering practise like moved CDEFGABC key used 12312345 in right hand and return after that left hand
--------------------------------
dont you only see this word is short that practise will take 6month or more....so practise it
--------------------
when its done now its course time....
read the sheet note.....maybe mary had a little lamb or some children song....and how to know bit used metronome. ehen you cant read fast..press the it slowly after you memorized it the the bit can go faster...if hard used your left big toe to move it....me for 6 month course until now if have any proggress i will post it again
---------
now iam learning eight note and stacato...its easy but hard when have a sheet
i have change the teacher in january..because the teacher only tell me see the book what should i press and which finger to press it .and dont much teach me...so i change it....i dont know its the real method of teaching or not
------
see ya...
