I play alot of improvs, and I got a problem with keeping rhythms... Actually I couldn't differ a 6/8 rhythm from a 4/4.. So... Can anyone post me any examples or explain this for me? I mean.. how do I recognise the rhythm in a piece? Thanks..

In 6/8 it's what's called "compound time "

4/4 would be "duple time"

These kind of rhythms sound different if you know what to look for.

Try tapping on a desk or something with your hand

Strong weak weak, Strong weak weak, Strong weak weak

now listen to how that sounds. It sounds like it's "moving foward" doesn't it?

Now try tapping on the desk again like this

Strong weak Strong weak Strong weak

How does it sound now? It sort of sounds like a steady march now doesn't it?

That's the difference between duple and compound time.

If you can hear that sort of a pattern in a song where it sounds like you're hearing the accent every 3rd beat than you know it's in compound time such as 6/8

If it sounds like a march than it would be duple time.

I have one question, how am I suposed to be able to play 2 notes with my left, while I play 3 in my right...
This song is kinda my favorite from Final Fantasy 1, and I wanna get it "perfect".

Any good ways to practise those? The piece itself is kinda easy, as you see it's very basic. Pretty much 2 to 3 keys played at the same time.

This Lesson will help you alot. It isnt that hard actually. My tip is to wach this first...
But also, at slow past just play the 3vs2, and suddanly the next day you can play it fast! Sleep always work for me Razz hehe =)

Hello Smile ! I learn to play Georgiana from Dario Marianelli, a lovely peace. I have a question similar to the one posted previously by VictorCS.

How to play a dotted quarter turn (5 notes) in the space of 3 eights? Below I copied the beginning measures and two variants on how the turn can be played. Which is the right way to play this? In variant B there is a polirythm (A tuplet of 5 notes vs3 notes). Is there some exercise to practice this one?

Well, this looks fine if you choose to play variant A Very Happy. Is it this one your prefered variant? What about a magic word for Variant B?
Then we have something like:
RH: MI___FA___MI___RE___MI___
LH: SOL______SI______MI______

So only the First MI and SOL can be played on the same syllable.

Well, I like variant B Smile I dont think there should be a pause there at the end! Turns usually sort of glide in to the next passage and specially like that one. So do the turn like the full dottet note value Smile If it sounds good, keep going Wink If it sounds bad, you can actually play it a little different, cause this is sort of also a Little up the the interpretation.

A saw this masterclass where this women said that the sheets only tell you the very basics you need to know, and that almost 100% relied on the interpretator!! Smile When I write sheets, I get all the values 100% correct, but if it was to be played just like written, the piece would sound like crap Wink hehe - If that made any sence?? Smile

Well, I do disagree a little though Smile I think its a different thing to choose an interpretation because you want to and to Have to choose an interpretation cause you cant do it the hard way Smile So even what you say might help him make this passage in the short run, I have Allways done everything the hard way, and it has really payed of!! Smile

I can give you the magic word as well: SLOW

^^

The reason this is the magic word, is cause if you do it Slow enough, now Im thinking SO SLOW that you can do it, even if it takes you ONE hour to play 5sec(put on the edge ofcouse)! Everything ca be done at 1BPM, its ALL about slowness Smile Even Moonlight Sonata 3mov is acheveble at 1BPM- Then you will have Loads of time to do accents, rubatos, accelrations, hit the right notes, dynamics etc!! Smile

So back to the case, do those tricky parts slow enough, and when it stick at a slow speed, and you dont make any mistakes, first after this you can start to think about increasing the speed!! So after you have thought about it for a litt while, hehe Wink .. then do it slightly faster, and suddanly you are sitting there playing Fantasi Impromtu without any stress Wink

A sheet is like a drawing of a house, it tells us how big it shall be, how many rooms there will be, where different things should be etc. But it does not tell us what materials or colors to use.

As a pianist you play a huge part in how it'll sound in the end, if two pianists play the same piece you'll hear it's the same piece, but it'll have two different personalities. ( kinda like you read this, you'll not perceive this as the other guy reading it, a cold/hot drink will also change how you percieve )

yeah Smile I also have to just grab my neck from time to time as well, telling myself: Now WHY dont you listen to what you are saying all the time; Slow - hehe, and then I slow it down a bit Smile I know how easy it is to get to eager, but I also know how efficient one can be when going slower, so I try to obey my rules most of the times Razz
