i think you should learn to play by notes first, then advance to intervals ..as intervals are very gd for quick reading ...but you must still learn your notes Wink that is my opinion ok gd luck

Never made any difference to me.
When I just look at a score at first I read notes, but when I try to play it I don't have enough time to read the notes themselves so I just try to "guess" the interval while playing.
I don't really sit to learn to read either, rather I play a lot of short 'exercise' pieces therefore I read quite a lot (considering).

hi endre Wink i tend to do both if the intervals are simple ...but like in anything we learn ...always best to be certain than to guess ..especially in the beginning stages Smile

Smile
What I mean is when I start to play something at first I just try to do it as fluently as possible, which means I read first note and then try to read the rest from intervals, if I fail I automatically try to see what note is it (sometimes simple, sometimes not so simple Smile )

So basically what I'm saying is I don't - conscientiously - do exercises to learn to read notes or intervals, I have some basic knowledge and I use it a lot and that helps in slowly getting better. After all, I want to be able to play, reading is not a goal but merely a tool in achieving the objective :p

Perhaps not very scientific and take it as such, just personal experience.
