Quarter Rest placed above or below notehead?

Post by greatman05 on Sun Aug 09, 2009 2:11 am

Hello. I have been having this problem for a while...whenever I see a note with a quarter rest placed below or above it, I get confused as to what I'm supposed to do...So, what do I do? For an example, here's a screenshot:

What I am talking about happens at the beginning of the fifth measure.

Hi =)

Its actually quite easy when you first get used to it Smile
You ca see that in that bar the Notes and most importantly their stems point in different direction. This means that they are meant so sound if they are Two different Voices! Read about voicings etc. So, look at it as if there are Two different pieces played At the same time in the same bar. And they sound good together!

First "piece"/VOICE is the half notes that point UPWARDS = 2x 1/2 = 4/4
Sec "piece/VOICE is the 1/4 pause, half note and 1/4note = 4/4 as well, but in the same bar.

So the 1/4 pause its just to say that the bottom piece/VOICE isnt to start before 1/4 of the bar has passed. ^^

So then, how do you play it? It's still confusing...

You just play it, but you make sure that it sound like its two different sound to the upper and lower level of notes. Like the upper match with the upper and the lower with the lower. Ill make a sound sample of it Wink
