Post by jnava Mon Aug 03, 2009 7:14 am

Hello,

I'm fairly new to piano playing. I have been playing trombone for several years. My question here is what or how can we practice so that we can recognize notes on bass and treble clef? I saw a video on Hanon but from what I saw it is used for hand exercises but not so much for learning to read music and being able to recognize it fast enough to play those exercises. Any suggestions?

As amateur advice as it gets, just sharing my personal experience. Smile

I have an A4 paper sheet, on one side treble clef the other side bass clef. Just with the lines. Quite big, meaning maybe 2 cm or more between the lines (a 100 HUF coin fits well between them :p) Once in a while my teacher takes a coin and moves it around and I have to say the name of the note. Or she says the name and I need to move the coin quickly to the right position. We just do it for 5 minutes or so. It's a good exercise, I am too lazy to do it myself but even with those 5 minutes I am getting quicker and quicker Smile

Of course just take a simple book and do the exercises. With every small piece you figure out you do some practice, figuring out what notes are there...

It'll take time, especially if you're not really in a hurry with it like me :p

I work out where C is on both staves, its pretty simple and easy to remember and my brain seems to like figuring out where the rest are from where they are. I hope to skip this step in my brain though by choosing another note once C is transfixed deep until I know them all and really well so I never forget. For now though I'm going mental about Intervalic Reading, it just helps my fingers go in the right place, but when the page changes or the next group of bars goes to the next line I'm like "Uhhhhh..." so I gotta keep doing exercises and repeating the rhymes til it sticks in my brain, its the only way!

There's an excellent little "game" called NOTECARD 3.0.
you can download it HERE for free.
It's like flash cards with notes, and it really helped me out memorizing the notes.

This game has been an excellent help for me to identify notes much easier. Highly recommended!
