finger - Finger Confusion... Empty Finger Confusion...

Post by zeroflash Tue Apr 22, 2008 12:49 pm

Hi All! Smile Thanks again for the help. Uhm.. I think I'm having a dilemma in playing the piano. Please do correct me if it's wrong. When I studied quite a number of years back by myself, I do notice that I tend to forget to use my thumb and pinky. I only use them when needed. If I can reach it using only three fingers, that's what I did.

I got confused when I saw that the thumb should go to C, Index to D, and so on. Now, I can still play at a moderate speed but it got all mixed up. I'm missing keys (around 30% of the time hitting 2 keys unintentionally as well).. well... a lot. waaa Sad Practicing the scales did help a bit but would you recommend for me to unlearn how I played before and start all over again with the finger positions.

Thanks so much. appreciate it guys!

-Aaron

This sound a bit strange to me Razz

But my answer is defenently YES!! Re learn!
You cant really go so far, if you ony use your middelfingers...
How do you play Octaves?? Razz (C-C or D-D...)
And that is a huge part of playing.

Im no expert, but i would defenently relearn, it wont take you to long Smile

Sorry. I got confused with what I said. Very Happy Yes, I used thumb+pinky for an octave. However, if what I'm playing can be reached by the middle 3 fingers (i.e. C,E,G) I'll use them instead of Thumb,Middle,Pinky. It was that I noticed that when it comes to more complicated piano sheets, I tend to miss a lot especially with multiple keys at the same time (i.e. C+E,D+F,E+G)

Thanks for the advise thomas (hope I got your name right). Hmm... yeah. It would probably best to start again with the finger positions. Smile Appreciate it.

Okay, I understand Smile But that is my advise =) Maby someone thinks different than me, but... =)
Couse you shold tink lazy when playing a piano. The nearest finger should be used, if it is the easyest whay to get there. Sometimes there is easyer whays with other fingers, but then you should do that instead. The easyer you can use your hands, the easyer the playing gets Wink Btw, the lazything, I stole from one of Andrews videolessons =)
And yeah, you got the name right Wink

Start with scales with contrary motion, ascending and descending. Try playing different articulations such as legato and staccato to train your fingers so that you don't mistaken your fingering.

I think it would be useful to start doing some of the Hanon excercises to train all of your fingers equally. If you can read, the first few exercises are pretty easy...they're just strength training exercises. If not you can find the videos on youtube pretty easily and I think there is a link in the general discussion section. But yeah, training both of your hands and all of your fingers equally is a really useful.

Thank you for the wonderful advises. Smile Yeah, I'm practicing scales as well and I do think that my right hand is a lot faster than my left. Very Happy I'll take more time to practice. Thanks a bunch to everyone!
