Sheet Music Doubts

I've gone through lypur's piano tutorials (great ones). Now I want to learn "How to compose Music". After reading through alot of wikipedia, struck on this book Anon Schoenberg's "Fundamentals of Musical Composition", the language book uses isn't intimidating however the examples given are...got stuck at the beginning itself (He was explaining phrases in it.). Help me guys.

The "C" with the line through it means 2/2 time.

The other curved line means to play legato. Edit: Now I'm not so sure. According to the link below, it could either mean legato or it's a "phrase mark", "connects a passage of music over several measures". So, I don't know!

The curved line is usually legato while the notes with dot over / under are played staccato. Like a line under or over the note is tenuto if I remember correctly.

Whenever it's not given I think you just figure it out by how it sounds (usually legato but not necessarily)
